This is a lot of 40 rough shagbark hickory dowels, made from wood sourced and milled locally here in New Hampshire. These are rough, unsanded dowels and may have some bowing, rough patches, smaller knots, chips, and other such features. The length of each dowel will be 16 inches (+/- 0.25") and the diameters will vary from 9/16" (0.5625) up to 11/16" (0.6875) or so, with the average being 5/8" (0.625). They will be a mix of sapwood and heart wood with some being two-toned. Grain will vary from straighter to wavy/sweeped/cross.
We hand-select decent quality dowels, and weed out any that have big knots that would overly compromise the overall strength, and we also weed out any that are TOO bowed or otherwise mangled... but you need to understand that these are ROUGH dowels straight out of a doweling machine with no sanding. Some dowels may have a slightly thicker nub at one end (3/4" or so for 1-2 inches) left over from the dowel-making process.
These dowels can be used for many purposes, including turning on a lathe into turkey call strikers, pens, drum beaters; using as fastening pegs in rustic construction (log cabins, pole barn plank floors, etc), and other woodworking/general craft purposes. You could even whittle them into homemade violin tuners for a cigar box guitar or banjo, cut them into short pieces and make homemade knobs, and more.
We pack the dowels into a Flat Rate Box or similar for shipping via USPS Priority Mail. These dowels are sold as-is, please be fully aware of what you are buying before proceeding.
