"1936 Cigar Box Pitchfork Fiddle-Drum" Musical Oddities Poster Series #4 - 18x12 reprint of a vintage U. S. Patent
We present the "Cigar Box Pitchfork Fiddle-Drum": a historical musical instrument patent poster from our Musical Oddities Series of breathtaking, oddball instruments. Art. History. Inspiration.
The Pitchfork Fiddle-Drum is the only cigar box instrument patent we've found so far. Based around an old Vaudeville instrument using a box to fret a one-string fiddle, this inventor added a resonating washtub with a bass drum pedal.
What's most fascinating is the fact that he felt the need to secure a patent on this!

- Many of the instruments came to fruition and were offered on the market.
- Some were sold door-to-door by snake oil salesmen.
- Others simply vanished over time, leaving no trace… save for their beautiful patent.
