Build this Walkabout Dulcimer With This Simple Canjo Neck Hack

Shane Speal shows you how to turn a simple $24 Canjo neck into a cool Walkabout Dulcimer (Strumstick).  The instrument shown in this tutorial is very basic and uses the neck-on-top method of building.  Soundholes and other decorative elements can be added for artistic flair.

Here's the tutorial video.  Scroll down for additional photos and a full parts list.

The hack requires these steps:

  1. Drill out extra spaces for guitar tuners on the headstock
  2. Add two additional guitar tuners
  3. Cut a fret slot at the nut location and adds a zero fret
  4. Slot out an area for a bridge, using a threaded rod as the bridge
  5. Drill three diagonal holes as string anchors
  6. Add three screws at the headstock for string trees
  7. String up with a wound G string and two high E strings, tuned F - C - C
