Corina Larks Vintage Cigar Box - Genuine Cigar Box from the early 1900s!

There is a story behind these boxes.

Gitty discovered his first Corina box while building the early Hobo Fiddles—an instrument inspired by the migrant workers of an earlier America, and by the travel, freedom, and wanderlust of life on the road.

The Hobo Fiddle was never meant to be a historically exact reproduction of a particular instrument. It was an idea: what might someone make when they had very little, but still wanted to make music?

A piece of discarded wood. A length of wire. A salvaged tuning peg. An empty cigar box.

After building a few Hobo Fiddles from vintage cigar boxes—including Swisher Sweets, El Producto, and Dutch Masters boxes dating back to the 1980s—Gitty stumbled across his first Corina box.

Unlike the more familiar cardboard cigar boxes, the Corina's wooden construction gave it a character all its own. The natural wood, the feel of it in hand, the fact that its age was closer to that of the Hobo itself, and the way it looked as the body of an instrument all seemed perfectly suited to the spirit of the Hobo Fiddle.

So he started collecting them.

Not simply because they made good instrument bodies, but because they seemed to belong to the same story as the Hobo Fiddle itself: finding value in what was available, and seeing possibility where others might see something disposable.

The Hobo Fiddle was about travel, freedom, wanderlust, ingenuity, and dignity in the face of scarcity.

These boxes became part of that story. And now, years later, we still find ourselves drawn to them for the same reason we were in the beginning. It feels wrong to leave them sitting on a shelf when they could have another life.

So we're giving them another chance to travel—to leave the shelf, find their way into someone's hands, and become a Hobo Fiddle, a cigar box guitar, or whatever else a builder's imagination can dream up.

A box made to hold cigars has already had one life. We're curious to see what its next one will be.
